joycal11.exe: This is the utility used to produce the joycal16.cfg files needed for joystick support in ffedos20.exe onwards. To use, place it in your FFE directory, plug in your joystick and run it. Note that the two "Centre joystick and press any key" tests will often give different results. Many sticks are designed to give different values depending on which direction you approach the centre from. Scaling exponent values above 1.0 cause output values to increase slower near the centre of the stick, hopefully giving you more control. Values of 2.0 are usually ok, but experiment to find your preferred settings. The deadzone is the region around the centre position that maps to zero movement. You want this set to the smallest value for which drift is zero. Usually one or two percent is fine. The maximums change how fast you turn at maximum stick displacement. 512 is usually about right. Polling the stick in interrupts can cause a noticeable drop in frame rates on slower PCs, but is more accurate. Choose 1 if you have a powerful PC. Resetting on centre is down to personal preference. I prefer setting this to 1 because it's more predictable. |

mouseacc.exe: This utility can be used to set mouse acceleration values prior to running FFE. It's recommended to only use this under raw DOS - Windows sets up DOS box acceleration values to match the control panel values. Type "mouseacc" on its own to get the syntax. |

setup: This a hacked version of the setup.exe version of FFE. The original version was very unreliable, especially when run under Windows. This hack appears to solve the problem. Note however that it doesn't work under Windows NT, so you'd have to configure it manually in that case. Usage instructions: Install over the top of setup.exe in a complete installation of FFE. Running it produces an hmiset.cfg file that should be compatible with ffedos20.exe, thus saving you the trouble of editing the file manually. Note that if digital and midi sound work in setup.exe, they should work in FFE. They use the same drivers. |

DisclaimerJJFFE is a hacked and reverse-engineered version of a commercial game, therefore it's probably illegal to download it even if you own the original legally. It will be removed rapidly if anyone complains. FFE has recently been re-released as shareware by Frontier Developments as part of the Elite Club. Contact infoIf you have problems with JJFFE, you should first check that you've installed it correctly and read the FAQ. If that doesn't solve your problem, you can email me at john@jaj22.demon.co.uk. Alternatively you can find me on the newsgroup alt.fan.elite, the web forum EBBS or on the IRC channel #gamedev on irc.starchat.net. |
