FEQ - Frequently Encountered Questions

It might seem a little early for creating FAQs, but you might be surprised at the number  of common questions. As an unofficial site dedicated to the club, I hate to imagine the level of mail to the official FDL site.

What is a FEQ?

WTF is a FEQ you well might ask. It is actually a FAQ but I wanted to keep the encounter theme running while making the FAQ for the site that little bit different.

What is the Elite Club?

Very basically the Elite Club is an idea from Frontier Development Ltd to both improve and distribute the two sequels to Elite; Frontier : Elite 2 and Frontier : First Encounters. Hopefully Elite will also be available to the club but legal issues prevent this at the moment.

The club will have two levels. One level (possibly named Squadrons) will consist of a group of people who are going to take on the source code for Frontier: Elite 2 and Frontier: First Encounters, fix the outstanding problems (bugs) and upgrade the games to work on todays hardware and operating systems. The other level (possibly named Cadets) allows the members to download the released games and subsequent Elite Club productions.

How do I join the Elite Club?

At the moment the Elite Club is awaiting formation. Once it is ready you will be able to join at the official site run by Frontier Developments. Information will be posted here once the Club begins operation but you will not be able to join from this site.

How much will it cost to join the Elite Club?

This is not decided yet. The latest figure seems to be around £10 (although £40 has been quoted at times) for Squadron (source code access) members and free for Cadets (download access).

When will  the Elite Club start?

This is not decided yet. The best estimate is sometime this month. There have been a number of unfortunate delys so far so unfortunately you just have to be patient. It will happen, and it will be soon. Watch this site for details.

How do I get source code?

You will be required to join as a Squadron level member of the club. This will be subject to a fee and the signing of an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement). Since it involves signing of a contract you must be 18 or over to apply for a Squadron membership.

How do you know all this?

Frontier Developments Ltd have allocated one of their staff, Andrew Gillett, to oversee the Club. He is a regular on alt.fan.elite and tends to respond as accurately as he can to questions asked on the group. At the moment most information is subject to change but the FEQ attempts to show the last known news on each question.

I sent you an email and you didn't reply?

I will reply to any email you send me but it might sometimes take a while. If you sent a bug list contribution it usually gets implemented and replied to the same day as I maintain the site. Other queries might take a little longer if I do not have the information immediately to hand. Please forgive the delay and rest assured I will respond to you as soon as I can.

My question isn't answered here!

Well, feel free to ask. This page is more to answer common queries than to respond to every question. You should check out the newsgroup if you have Usenet access alt.fan.elite. If you do not have Usenet access then there are a number of web interfaces to Usenet though places such as Deja News. Many people on the group can answer a question very quickly and you will find both Andrew Gillett ( future Elite Club "manager "), and David Braben (co-creator of Elite and creator of the sequels) post quite often to the group. You can also check my site news pages for the latest developments and the links section contains a number of links to sites that cover each game in the series in depth as well as links to related resources..
